Food of the Week - Hummus

This week is hummus.  I have tried the Stop & Shop brand (Simply Enjoy I think?) Roasted Garlic and also Cedar's Tomato and Basil.  I don't know why I was so adamant about trying hummus.  (Hommus? I don't know why different companies spell it differently.)  I may have tried it once or twice on a holiday or something and didn't really like the consistency.  Or maybe I just liked all the other dips better.  Either way, it seemed like it needed a chance.

I tried the Simply Enjoy Roasted Garlic first.  There is actually minced garlic on the top of the hummus, so once you open it you need to stir it thoroughly to distribute all the garlic.  My mother had purchased this for herself and kindly let me try it with some mini sour cream and onion rice cakes.  It was delicious!  I went home and bought myself a container (along with the other one) and ate it with carrots and Parmesan Garlic Triscuits.  I like a lot of flavor, so this was perfect for me.

Next up was the Cedar's Sundried Tomato and Basil Hommus.  Again, I'm not sure why it's spelled differently, but I'm going to just go with it here.  I'm not sure what made me choose this one over the other varieties, but I wanted something distinctly different from the garlic hummus.  I expected it to have a little more of a powerful taste, but it didn't quite get there for me.  It was good with the Triscuits, but it was a little sweet and tangy with the carrots.  I'm sure if I had paired it with something else I might have had different results.

Tonight, I decided to try it with light popcorn.  Popcorn is one of the lower-point and healthier snacks, so a long time ago I started dipping popcorn in salsa.  It's a little messy to eat, but it tastes good.  And it's even better knowing it's a healthy alternative to chips.  So I skipped the salsa in favor of the garlic hummus, and guess what?  It was actually pretty good.

Tomorrow I'm going to try something else with the tomato & basil hommus.  I'm not sure what I'll do yet..time will tell!

Until then, eat your heart out!
