Hello all!
I’m beginning this “Food of the Week” with oranges. Simple enough, right? Wrong. I am not a fruit eater. I haven’t been much of a fruit eater for most of my life. I like apples, grapes, and some melons – and that’s about it. (I warned you I was a picky eater.) I was never a fan of citrus fruits. I don’t have a good reason as to why (although you’ll find I don’t have a good reason as to why I haven’t tried most of the foods to follow). Oranges seemed like a lot of work – you have to peel them, the taste & the acid never appealed to me, the smell just about knocks me on my butt every time I attempt to eat one. But I had to try it.
So I went to the store with my best friend, Caitrin, and she (patiently, thank goodness) showed me how to pick an orange and pointed me in the direction of navel oranges.
---Let me interrupt myself here by saying that in the few weeks before, I had given other citrus fruits a chance. I had a Clementine, which I LOVED, and a grapefruit, which I like but they’re so sour and so much work to eat that I’ve been neglecting them. But I do like them.---
So I brought my two oranges home, put them in my fridge, and thought about them for two days straight. I wasn’t scared (of a food? Really?) but more just avoiding it. This was a big step for me – trying all these new foods – and I needed to let the thought sink in.
Finally, I dove right in. I peeled it apart and dove in. To be honest, I do have texture issues and this was a prime example. I didn’t like the texture, I didn’t like all the white stuff the peel left behind, and the taste just wasn’t something I loved. Would I eat one again in the future? Sure. But it wouldn’t be my first choice.
Until next week – eat your heart out!
