Food Diary - June 19

I have a pay-it-forward moment to share.  This morning, just like every other morning, I got off the bus and wandered up the steps of the Woodlawn train station. I swiped my card and saw "PLEASE SWIPE AGAIN" on the card reader.  So I swiped again, and again, and again.  I stepped back and tried a different turnstile; same problem.  I stepped back, though by that time most people had already gotten through.  My card is slightly bent, but I had used it to get on the bus just fine, so I didn't think there should be any issue.  I tried straightening it out and still got the same error.  I was about to go get a new card when a man in front of me turned and held his own card out to me, asking if I needed his.  I was about to refuse, but the train was due to leave one minute from then, and his arm was already extended.  I took it, swiped it, and got through.  I assumed it was an unlimited pass or something, but it wasn't.  I glanced at the card reader as I handed the card back to him and noticed he had $10 left on his card - it wasn't unlimited.   I looked up to thank him, but he was already heading up the stairs at that point.  I shouted thank you to him, but he never turned around.

I'm still not sure what happened with my card (though I will find out on the ride home), but I wasn't able to properly thank this man.  I did make my train and because of that, I made it to work on time.  So I figure the next best thing to do is pay it forward.  Not a simple thing like holding a door for someone or letting someone jump in front of me in line for the bus, but a real favor.  So today, or in the days coming, I will pay it forward to someone.  I will not look for gratitude, but instead hope that the person pays it forward.  It would be nice to have a little more kindness in the world, don't you think?

On to my food diary, here we go:

Breakfast:
Chobani plain yogurt with Trader Joe's Maple Pecan granola
Red seedless grapes

Lunch:
Salad with chicken, jalapenos, avocado, red onion, shredded cheese, light ranch dressing
Bite of pita with veggies and hummus
Spaghetti squash seasoned with garlic powder, onion powder, and ground black pepper

Dinner:
Steamed chicken and broccoli dipped in garlic sauce
2 pork steamed dumplings
